In today's lab we learned a little about Atoms and what an atom is. An atom is the smallest component of an element having the chemical properties of the element, consisting of protons and one or more electrons bound to the nucleus by electrical attraction; the number of protons determines the identity of the element. Our purpose was the we were trying to make hydrogen using a balloon, strips of magnesium, a Volumetric Flask, and Citric Acid.
For starters my group took the magnesium strips and drop them into the flask. Then we poured the citric acid soon after, we then quickly proceeded to put the balloon over the flask. When the acid met the This occurred because the magnesium was bonding to the carbon and oxygen in the acid and getting rid of its hydrogen atoms. The hydrogen that was released was captured by the balloon. In my groups discoveries we found out that hydrogen is very light. We then proceeded to hold the balloon over a candle to burn all of the hydrogen. Based on what my group and I learned in class before the experiment I could expect that there would be water on the inside of the balloon after we popped it, because the oxygen in the air would have reacted with the latex. magnesium they began to bond; and began heating up and bubbling.
