For this lab we first had to concentrate hydrogen peroxide and that had to take two days to do. During that time we had gathered all materials for this experiment, everything seemed well until the fire nation attacked. It had seemed that we used the wrong recipe for the toothpaste, we were using potassium iodine, the old recipe was using yeast. Both, are different but serve the same purpose, they act as a catalyst for the hydrogen peroxide. Once we had mixed everything together we used Potassium Iodine as a catalyst to speed up the hydrogen's decomposition. The equation would look a little like this (2 H2O2 → 2 H2O + O2) this is the decomposition, it moves really slow so potassium iodine just speeds up the process hence the catalyst. Then we took this outside once outside we had a setup with different roles. Adrian would place the materials in different spots, Bryan would pour the soap in first, then Micah would pour the food coloring in the bottle, finally Bryan would pour the potassium iodine in the flask and we all watched the magic happen. Our results weren't quite what we expected them to be but it didn't entirely fail. We expected it to shoot up in the air but that wasn't the case, what it did do was overflow and a lot more came out than we thought. Once it sprouted out it started to smoke we believe that it was just the atoms releasing energy it absorbed from the potassium iodine. We then proceeded to touch it because all it was; was foamy soap with an orange yellow color. I think that I did my part in the project I didn't entirely do everything right but, I didn't do anything wrong to ruin the project. Before the project we did have some problems as stated before but nothing that could ruin the project or my performance. I worked with Adrian, Bryan, and Micah I believe that our group performed well we didn't really goof off a lot we got into crunch time when it mattered. I would probably change the flask we used; we chose the volumetric flask but I would have preferred the graduated cylinder. If I had to choose new people I wouldn't these were the right guys for the job and I wouldn't trade them for anyone else. For this experiment we could have used different ingredients not really sure what though, that could probably continue the experiment not really sure what though. I have to say thanks to Amanda she was a big help to this project and helped us realize that we had the wrong recipe, so without her it would have never worked in the first place. Thanks Amanda!
